Owning a scooter is excellent fun; particularly when the weather is behaving itself. It is also great for saving a bit of money of course which, as the price of gasoline continues to rise, is likely to be an increasing concern for many. With so many types available however, it can be confusing to select the best one.

The first thing to determine is how much you wish to spend. It comes as a surprise to many that the cost can in excess of ten thousand dollars. This is of course for something with a large engine, of about 600cc and tends to be the higher end of leading manufacturers.

However, if nothing more than a run around is required, it is perfectly possible to get a good quality new scooter from less than two thousand dollars. And of course, a simple search through popular online auction sites can get a decent sized reduction on any price and model.

When deciding your budget however, it is important to maintain a certain amount of flexibility in your approach, in order that your needs can be well met. Whether this means slightly upping the amount you wish to spend, or lowering what you expect to achieve is of course up to you.

When composing your list of “must have’s”, consider how often it will be used. If it will be used day after day, perhaps as the prime mode of transport; something with a large engine and all round comfort should be selected. For just dashing into the stores, or a ten minute ride to work and back each day; something smaller could be used.

When looking at what size engine to buy, ensure you have thoroughly checked local laws to ensure your choice will be street legal for where you intend to drive it. The smallest sized engine, at 50cc will be limited to about 45 miles an hour. A standard size for city driving is about 150cc to 200cc, where speeds of 65 miles can be reached.

To make the experience better for you, you can look to certain things like automatic transmissions and electronic starters. These will inevitably push the price up, but should not be too excessive with all things considered. For first time scooter riders, these may well be the better option too.

There are some concerns that practicality is not the best. However, this is somewhat of a misconception considering that many types have under seat storage and side bags again, for not too much additional cost.

Once all the essential decisions have been made, you will be able to really have a bit of fun. Some modern types look a little too functional, and people really enjoy the retro styled Italian scooters; from Vespa and Lambretta, but Honda and Yamaha produce sleek and stylish looking models too.

Having made your choice, you are sure to have hours of fun and wonder why you hadn’t got a scooter earlier. However, do be extra careful on the road and wear the right clothing. And if at all possible; seek shelter when the wind and rain hits; it just isn’t as much fun!
